J. C. Raulston's untimely death at 56, in an automobile accident in 1996, brought to an end an exceptional life. His obituary in the New York Times described him as "a generous-spirited giant among horticulturists." At his memorial service, he was called "the linchpin of the American horticultural community."
Part one of this book chronicles the life of this complex man, from his Oklahoma boyhood, through his horticultural education and later teaching, and on to his greatest achievements the establishment of the well-respected arboretum at N. C. State University (which now bears his name), the free plant distribution system for the nursery industry, and the mentoring of some of today's most prominent plantsmen. Raulston's outgoing public persona is contrasted with his shy private self, with background revealing the influences and pressures that produced his triumphs and his troubles.
Part two covers some of Raulston's legacy, including transcripts of several of his popular lectures, annotated listings of his plant introductions and distributions, and his personal lists of life goals and philosophies.
Tony Avent, owner of Plant Delights Nursery and a Timber Press author, says "Finally, the inspirational story of this centuries most important horticulturist can be told. Even those who knew J. C. for decades will be surprised to learn the 'rest of the story' of the man who shaped so many gardening lives."

I never had the opportunity to meet JC, which will always be a disappointment to me, but to read about the incredible amount he achieved in his short life is to see proof that you can make a big difference in the world in a brief time if you simply never stop trying to do twice the amount of work that any "normal" human does, on hardly any sleep, in half of a normal lifespan! Thank heavens that the J C Raulston Arboretum will remain to not only continue his work in educating the public about the amazing variety of plants which can be grown in the Southeastern United States, but to preserve his work in plant collection and hybridization and allow the rest of us mere mortals to benefit from his amazing achievement.Bobby Ward is a charming, engaging writer who has has written an amazingly informative book which is also great fun to read. I look forward to reading his other works now, and recommend this one to everyone who loves gardens and gardeners!

Chlorophyll In His Veins; J C Raulston Horticultural Ambassador Bobby J Ward Roy C Dicks 9780615324135 Books Reviews
A stunning biographical account of one of America's most innovative plantsmen and educators.Backyard hobby gardeners and plant collectors have benefited immensely
from the horticultural offerings now made available by nursery growers who were students and directly influenced by JC Raulston and his boundless enthusiasm for
what would work and not work for American landscapes. The explosion of plant colors, varieties and forms over the past twenty-five years can be attributed in part to Raulston's influence on the commercial trade. One example is Tont Avent's Plant Delights Nursery in Raleigh,NC whose mail-order catalogue is legendary.
[...]In addition the collection of Raulston's lectures and plant lists is worth the price of the book!
Bobby Ward has done an amazing amount of biographical research on JC's life-both in and out of the closet. Not only is this work a great contribution to horticultural literature but is also on the leading edge of the gay biography-a genre which will be coming out-or should I say into it's own-with the repeal of DADT.
In a gentle way this book is becoming a classic beyond the world of horticulture.
Finally in writing this review on the eve of the Winter Solstice it's hard to imagine that it has been fourteen years to the date when I said goodbye to JC and watched him drive away into the night and to eternity.
a good read
Excellent book!
This was a wonderful read. Quite a fascinating story of a complex and brilliant human being. We in the Raleigh area are blessed with the tremendous legacy that bears his name.
